Education

I earned my CFA Charter in 2000. I have a AB from Middlebury College in Mathematics and a MS/Ph.D. in Statistics from UNC - Chapel Hill.

Experience

I have been both and academic and a risk manager for several multi-billion dollar hedge funds. I worked for many years as a math professor at Lafayette College teaching statistics, calculus, and assorted other courses. Then I entered finance and worked at several large hedge funds as director of risk management. That gives me very broad based practical knowledge of finance and capital markets. I have tutored CFA exams extensively (if you work with me and study as I tell you to, I will literally guarantee a pass). I have also worked with CFAI on other years grading exams and setting solutions.

Hobbies

I love playing chess and can't believe God didn't give me any particular talent at it. I play online often and if you want to play chess after tutoring, I am here for you. I enjoy building and fixing projects and have always been good at handyman things which I do around my house and at friend's houses. I am always amazed at how similar very disparate things can really be. For example, writing a computer programming, wiring your house, installing plumbing, and doing a math proof are often the same thought process about logical flows. Solzhenitsyn in "One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich" tells us that a man with 2 trades can easily learn ten. This is an important part of my life philosophy and even my tutoring when things are going well. We have this massive pile of curriculum and yet the number of canonical problems is usually fairly small. When we find them and solve them we master the subject. Of course, sometimes that takes some time. I've been doing probability theory my whole life and I am constantly gaining insights into "Littlewood's Three Principles" which are Littlewood's reduction of this gigantic field of real analysis into a sentence with 2 commas. Eh, he's smarter than me but he is too dead to tutor you anyway. I am now an empty nester with my first grandchild on the way and family is very important to me so I work hard at staying close with them.
